Lapis Lazuli, the original blue gemstone, is a rock composed principally of the mineral lazurite with variable amounts of pyrite (the brassy flecks) and white calcite.  The intrinsic blue color of lazurite is caused by sulfur, an interesting and unusual case where a non-metallic element yields a strong color.
